Description

Upgrading R5.5 system to R6. Ran upgrader via CD using non-graphical install. Chose Upgrade and selected the "Do_not_format" option for the root partition filesystem as I did not want to reformat mine.

Upgrade proceeded until the "Preparing for life" screen where it hung for a long time. Eventually (after several hours) switched to messages console, the last visible message was something like "Upgrading the database...". Switched to a terminal and ran ps -ef, saw near the bottom was mention of a "restore_km_db_chroot.sh" process. One of the parameters to this was "/tmp/chroot.db" so I did tail -f on this file and saw messages that mysql was being stopped and restarted over and over again.

Tried upgrade a couple more times with same options and got same result. Eventually tried formatting the root partition by keeping the default setting (ext3?) and then the upgrade completed properly, though some further manual reconstruction was necessary after rebooting to get the system working. (e.g. rebuild fstab, restore config files, etc.)

Apologies that the details are somewhat vague, I lost the logs and stuff I'd saved when I finally decided to let it format the root partition. There is a bit of additional information in [[http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20399|this forum thread]].
